Limiting Cyanobacteria in Freshwater Ecosystems

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently published recommended levels for two cyanobacteria, microcystins and cylindrospermopsin, in recreational waters.

Cyanobateria, also know as blue-green algae, can be harmful to humans and other animals. Because of this the EPA has taken the steps to set a recommended amount for these two cyanobacteria and encouraging states, territories, and authorized tribes to adopt this recommendation. The news release states: “EPA’s recommendations are protective of all age groups and are based on peer-reviewed and published science.” Click her for full article.

The control of cyanobacteria is an issue all water treatment facilities face. PVIA is constantly monitoring Lake Wister and treating it to prevent harmful amounts of cyanobacteria.
